Stored product pest

Ephestia (cadra) cautella

Common name: Tropical warehouse moth
Scientific name: Ephestia (cadra) cautella
Order: Lepidoptera
Affects: Grain, ground grain (meal), cocoa, nuts, walnuts…
Main season: All year round

EPHESTIA (CADRA) CAUTELLA

Morphology and biology

The adult’s forewings are a greyish-brown with dark markings and stripes on the outer middle part. The hindwings are wide, transparent, with clearly visible veining and with the upper veining also running along the whole of the wing. The larvae are a whitish colour with clearly visible black spots on the body.

The female oviposits up to 300 eggs on the products she attacks or lets them fall in between the spaces in the fibres of the containers. The larva moves about freely between the stored products, contaminating them with its silk threads and excrement. During maturity, the larva enters into a wandering phase, dragging a thin thread of silk that covers the surface of the grains or its containers. With relative temperature conditions and humidity between 28⁰C and 70% they complete their development in 25 days. The adults have short lives and live approximately 14 days or less.

Damages

It damages grains, cereal flours, corn, oilseed cakes and flour, palm oil seeds, cocoa, concentrated feed for livestock, nuts and walnuts. It is considered to be a secondary pest of healthy wholegrain cereals, as it only grows if the grains have been damaged by other insects or there is a high percentage of broken grains with impurities. The larvae have a preference for bacteria. For cereal flour and other ground products, it is a primary pest because of the damage it causes and because of the contamination of its silk threads and excrement.

Detection and monitoring

1 to 3 traps should be used for every room in the warehouse and they must also be placed at least 5 metres apart from each other. The traps must remain active all year round in warehouses with products.

Mass trapping

The males of this species are captured for the purpose of reducing mating, so that the unfertilised females will lay unviable eggs. In this way, the pest population is reduced.

For mass trapping the number is increased to 4 traps for every 100m² of warehouse, separated at least 5 metres apart.

Necessary material

The following traps and pheromone can be used: ECONEX POLILLERO, ECONEX FOLDING WHITE TRIANGULAR without sheets or ECONEX DISPOSABLE WHITE TRIANGULAR and pheromone diffuser ECONEX EPHESTIA (CADRA) CAUTELLA with 40 days’ duration.

The trap ECONEX FOLDING WHITE TRIANGULAR without sheets is activated by placing an ECONEX PLASTIC SHEET FOR TRIANGULAR TRAP 1 UNIT at the base. The sheet is impregnated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive, without solvents, in which the insects remain trapped.

ECONEX LEARNING CENTER

ECONEX puts at your disposal the first open knowledge center that brings together everything necessary to implement pest biocontrol in your crops. We have developed different types of resources to share with you the knowledge we have acquired during our more than 40 years of experience. Each of them is designed to respond, in the best possible way, to different questions related to pheromones, attractants, repellents and insect traps.
