The adults measure 3 to 4mm long and are reddish-brown to black in colour. They have an elongated head in the shape of a “rostrum” or snout that is characteristic of the entire Curculionidae family. Their elytra are welded together, so for that reason they cannot fly.
The females lay their eggs inside the cereal grain kernels, in a chamber that they have previously bored into with their mouths. The larvae are white with a brown head, hunchbacked and legless. They complete their development inside the grain, so the attack goes unnoticed until the adults abandon it and go outside. At 25⁰C and with a humidity level of 75%, their cycle is complete between 40 and 45 days.

It is one of the main cereal pests. The damage is primarily caused by the larvae, although the adults also feed on the grain. They attack all types of cereal (wheat, barley, corn, etc.) and also some of their by-products such as pasta. It is a primary species capable of breaking grain, and therefore favouring the attack of other secondary species.
1 to 3 traps should be used for every room in the warehouse and must also be placed at least 5 metres apart from each other. The traps must remain active all year round in warehouses with products.
The males of this species are captured for the purpose of reducing mating, so that the unfertilised females will lay unviable eggs. In this way, the pest population is reduced.
For mass trapping the number is increased to 4 traps for every 100m² of warehouse, separated at least 5 metres apart.
The following traps and pheromone can be used: ECONEX POLILLERO, ECONEX FOLDING WHITE TRIANGULAR without sheets or ECONEX DISPOSABLE WHITE TRIANGULAR and pheromone diffuser ECONEX SITOPHILUS GRANARIUS with 40 days’ duration.
The trap ECONEX FOLDING WHITE TRIANGULAR without sheets is activated by placing an ECONEX PLASTIC SHEET FOR TRIANGULAR TRAP 1 UNIT at the base. The sheet is impregnated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive, without solvents, in which the insects remain trapped.
