The adults measure approximately 1cm long and are greyish-brown. Their wingspan varies between 14 and 16mm. The eggs are small, round and a slightly yellow-orange and creamy white colour. As they mature, they tend to display a more greenish-grey colour.
The female lays her eggs on or near the fruit and the larvae start to perforate and infest the fruit immediately. At an optimum temperature of 28⁰C the larvae complete their development in 43 days.

The larva generally tends to damage grapes, dates and other dried fruits, as well as, cocoa, chocolate, cereals and other ground products. It is of minor importance compared with E. cautella and E. kuehniella.
1 to 3 traps should be used for every room in the warehouse and must also be placed at least 5 metres apart from each other. The traps must remain active all year round in warehouses with products.
The males of this species are captured for the purpose of reducing mating, so that the unfertilised females will lay unviable eggs. In this way, the pest population is reduced.
For mass trapping the number is increased to 4 traps for every 100m² of warehouse, separated at least 5 metres apart.
The following traps and pheromone can be used: ECONEX POLILLERO, ECONEX FOLDING WHITE TRIANGULAR without sheets or ECONEX DISPOSABLE WHITE TRIANGULAR and pheromone diffuser ECONEX EPHESTIA (CADRA) FIGULILELLA with 40 days’ duration.
The trap ECONEX FOLDING WHITE TRIANGULAR without sheets is activated by placing an ECONEX PLASTIC SHEET FOR TRIANGULAR TRAP 1 UNIT at the base. The sheet is impregnated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive, without solvents, in which the insects remain trapped.
