The adults are a greyish colour, 16mm long with two light transversal stripes on the forewings. The caterpillars are 11-12mm long, light grey and resemble other Ephestia species.
The female oviposits her eggs inside the food and its surroundings, with the caterpillars being born approximately 3 to 5 days later. It has various overlapping generations throughout the year, depending on the humidity and temperature.

In addition to tobacco, it damages flour, ground cereals, nuts, rice, cocoa and chocolate.

1 to 3 traps should be used for every room in the warehouse and must also be placed at least 5 metres apart from each other. The traps must remain active all year round in warehouses with products.
The males of this species are captured for the purpose of reducing mating, so that the unfertilised females will lay unviable eggs. In this way, the pest population is reduced.
For mass trapping the number is increased to 4 traps for every 100m² of warehouse, separated at least 5 metres apart.
