The colour of this moth varies from light grey to yellow ochre, with a red-brown transversal band on the tips of the forewings. Without extending the wings, it measures 8 to 10mm. The larvae are an off-white colour with a brown head and can measure up to 17mm.
The females lay between 60 and 400 eggs, singly or in groups, directly onto the food source. Last instar larvae are very active and can abandon the food and travel a great distance. Then, they form a cocoon and pupate. At 30⁰C and 70% relative humidity, they can complete their cycle in 28 days.
Plodia interpunctella adult
Plodia interpunctella attacks dried food products, dried fruits, peanuts, almonds, cocoa nibs, marzipan and seeds. With less frequency it attacks cereal grains (as a secondary pest), of which it only eats the grain germ.
Plodia interpunctella larvae
1 to 3 traps should be used for every room in the warehouse and must also be placed at least 5 metres apart from each other. The traps must remain active all year round in warehouses with products.
The males of this species are captured for the purpose of reducing mating, so that the unfertilised females will lay unviable eggs. In this way, the pest population is reduced.
For mass trapping the number is increased to 4 traps for every 100m² of warehouse, separated at least 5 metres apart.

The trap ECONEX FOLDING WHITE TRIANGULAR without sheets is activated by placing an ECONEX PLASTIC SHEET FOR TRIANGULAR TRAP 1 UNIT at the base. The sheet is impregnated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive, without solvents, in which the insects remain trapped.
