The forewings are a yellowish colour and the hindwings are greyish and smaller in size. Both pairs of wings have long fringes of hairs along the outer edges. Without extending the wings they measure 6-9 mm. The larvae are yellowish-white and have a small yellowish-brown head.
The females lay around 150 eggs, preferably amongst the grain. The larvae penetrate the grain and complete their cycle until the moths are born.

They attack the cereal grains both in the field and in the warehouse. Although they can attack any type of cereal, they prefer corn and wheat.
Damage to corn caused by Sitotroga cerealella
1 to 3 traps should be used for every room in the warehouse and must also be placed at least 5 metres apart from each other. The traps must remain active all year round in warehouses with products.
The males of this species are captured for the purpose of reducing mating, so that the unfertilised females will lay unviable eggs. In this way, the pest population is reduced.
For mass trapping the number is increased to 4 traps for every 100m² of warehouse, separated at least 5 metres apart.
The following traps and pheromone can be used: ECONEX POLILLERO, ECONEX FOLDING WHITE TRIANGULAR without sheets or ECONEX DISPOSABLE WHITE TRIANGULAR and pheromone diffuser ECONEX SITOTROGA CEREALELLA with 40 days’ duration.
The trap ECONEX FOLDING WHITE TRIANGULAR without sheets is activated by placing an ECONEX PLASTIC SHEET FOR TRIANGULAR TRAP 1 UNIT at the base. The sheet is impregnated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive, without solvents, in which the insects remain trapped.
