The adults of both species are small insects measuring 3 to 4mm long and are a red-brown colour. They are also physically distinguished by the shape of their antennae. The larvae are slender and a creamy yellow colour at the beginning, to later turn a light honey colour at the end of their development. They grow to 6 or 7mm in size.
The female lays her eggs inside the products that she infests. In favourable conditions each female lays between 400-500 eggs for more than a year. With an average temperature of 25⁰C and relative humidity of 75% they complete their development in 32 days.
Tribolium castaneum adults
Both the adults and larvae damage large amounts of goods, but the most serious damage is caused in flour. Other products that are attacked are cereal grains, dried legumes, cocoa, spices, dried fruits etc. They are secondary pests with regards to cereals, as they only feed on broken or damaged kernels.
1 to 3 traps should be used for every room in the warehouse and must also be placed at least 5 metres apart from each other. The traps must remain active all year round in warehouses with products.
The males of this species are captured for the purpose of reducing mating, so that the unfertilised females will lay unviable eggs. In this way, the pest population is reduced.
For mass trapping the number is increased to 4 traps for every 100m² of warehouse, separated at least 5 metres apart.
The following traps and pheromone can be used: ECONEX POLILLERO, ECONEX FOLDING WHITE TRIANGULAR without sheets or ECONEX DISPOSABLE WHITE TRIANGULAR and pheromone diffuser ECONEX TRIBOLIUM CASTANEUM or ECONEX TRIBOLIUM CONFUSUM, with 40 days’ duration.
The trap ECONEX FOLDING WHITE TRIANGULAR without sheets is activated by placing an ECONEX PLASTIC SHEET FOR TRIANGULAR TRAP 1 UNIT at the base. The sheet is impregnated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive, without solvents, in which the insects remain trapped.
